Zero waste sewing

Anna Hicks was our speaker for our 33rd birthday meeting and, as always, she delivered a brilliant presentation even pulling out a velcro’d example so we could see a shirt being made in real time!

Anna has been studying zero waste fabric design which changes how you design clothing in order to use all the fabric.

The most basic shape is a rectangle and she showed us many examples of what she has made using a simple rectangle.

It was a very informative and fun presentation. Unfortunately some of the videos I took are too large to post here but I’ll try cut them to size so you can get a glimpse into how dynamic and interesting this talk was.

Anna shared a range of resources with us as well.

Haptic and Hue, who we’ve previously recommended, also have a recent episode about Zero Waste design -Series 5 Episode 43 ‘How Recycling Returned to Seville Road’

We also had a stop for cake and cake cutting, then onto our show and tell!

We finished the night with the traditional fabric lucky dip, and the a fabric scramble as our president started throwing them out to everyone!
