Ephemerality in our last CBD meeting

June was our last meeting at St John’s Church hall, with our move to Johnsonville Uniting Church happening next month! Please note we will now be meeting every second Monday of the month.

Our speaker, Shirley Dixon, was well-placed to be our last guest as she talked about her journey into the world of prayer flags and embracing the ephemeral nature of them. Her talk was fascinating- the spiritual nature of the flags and how they’re put up for the benefit of the environment, not for the person placing them. They’re made to last about a year and when shredded and torn they are replaced so new blessings can be blown across the environment. She had put up her own in her apartment balcony which are starting to shred after three months just as planned.

She emphasised that sometimes beauty is in the intention, not the longevity, of the work and embracing impermanence can make us more aware of the blessings in life. A beautiful message and very fitting.

We are embracing connection in our new venue with the doors opening at 6:30pm to allow us to eat together beforehand and share a cup of tea. The library will be open to browse and some evenings there will be challenges and demonstrations.

If you need a ride to Johnsonville please reach out to any committee member or to the guild email. There will be car pooling options available for everyone.

To celebrate the move and Matariki -the start of the Māori new year, Judi has issued a call to bring any star quilts you may have for show and tell. We also want to celebrate quilts made for us and as gifts in future meetings as we do so well on refuge quilts that we sometimes forget our own.
