Nest Collective
We had the wonderful Shirley Wilson from Nest Collective come to visit.
Nest Collective is a charity near and dear to our hearts. They provide essentials for the first year of a babies life to families referred to them in need. These packs are substantial, with over 150 items in them, and every one is packed with care by volunteers. Their mission statement is “Every baby in Aotearoa New Zealand deserves the best start in life.”
In January to March of this year alone Wellington Nest created 80 packs, containing over 12,000 items. They worked with 258 community partners and over 70 volunteers to make this happen, and countless unknown donators.
In a survey of recipients, meant to find out feedback and improvement opportunities, 97.5% of whānau either agreed, or strongly agreed, that there were items in the box they needed but would have struggled to afford. 100% responded that they either agreed, or strongly agreed, receiving the box made them feel supported to care for their baby.
Wellington Quilters is proud to be amongst those donators. In every meeting we have items donated for Nest, and we had well over 60 present at the meeting to give. Several of these were quilt-as-you-go ones where guild members made panels, and our president Judi assembled them.
We’d also like to give a huge thank you to Sue at Busy Bee Quilt Shop who donated many quilts for Nest, and who provides much appreciated quilting services for many of our community quilts.
Our exhibition was introduced: It’s a Stitch Up!
Entries are encouraged to be via the online form, and to please make something for the sales table. Entries are to be turned in at our September meeting, and plastic tubes will be available at the August and September meetings.
We also had a wonderful show and tell to close out the meeting.
