Eight complete projects come to life in more than 200 photos and illustrations, and detailed directions make it easy to make a cherished heirloom or priceless gift. MARCH 2011 Paradise Stitched Sashiko & Applique Quilts by Sylvia Pippen These glowing quilts bring together two of quilting's best-loved traditions: Japanese Sashiko and colorful appliqué. A large quilt gallery will inspire you to design your own Sashiko/appliqué creations. The author was introduced to Japanese design, Sashiko, and the fine art of quiltmaking by her mother, Kitty Pippen. She says “I love to teach and introduce Sashiko to students of all ages. When I lived on the west side of Kauai, I taught weekly classes at Nana's House, where students from the age of 8 to 80 gathered to create their own Sashiko designs. Breaking from Japanese Sashiko tradition, they wanted to work in lots of color and use designs that reflected life in Hawaii, such as hukilaus of tropical fish caught up in a Sashiko net, or fragrant butter-yellow plumeria. From my wonderful students, I learned how to work with diverse ages, abilities, and the true meaning of aloha. I encourage you to use Sashiko not only as a teaching tool but also for your own artistic expression. As you can see, Sashiko can be adapted to any design. And remember, it isn't how perfect your stitches are but how much you enjoy the journey along the way.” Japanese Taupe Quilts : 125 blocks in calm and neutral colours by Susan Briscoe In Japanese Taupe Quilts, acclaimed textile artist Susan Briscoe offers a wealth of tips, techniques, and ideas for both the beginner and the experienced quilter. The block patterns have been drafted from a variety of traditional block sources, including Japanese fabric, paper and architectural designs, and kamon family crests. For each block there is a photograph, a clear instructional diagram or template, fabric palette and cutting guide, as well as detailed instructions for making the block. At-a-glance icons indicate skill level and techniques used. Patchwork, appliqué, embellishment, and quilting techniques are clearly explained with step-by-step photographs, from cutting out to finishing off. The blocks can be mixed and matched, tessellated for allover patterns, or combined into sampler quilts. Combination ideas are supplied throughout the block directory, together with six simple projects -- a pillow, lap quilt, tote bag, table runner, wall hanging and satchel handbag -- to inspire readers to create exquisite quilts in the distinctive Japanese taupe style. FEBRUARY 2011 Beautifully Embellished Landscapes by Joyce R.
Becker, 2006.
Making Scrap Quilts to Use it Up by Lynne Edwards This is a replacement for a book which was purchased some years ago, but went missing. Lynne Edwards provides quilters with plenty of ideas and inspiration for making quilts and other, smaller projects from their fabric stash. The full-size quilt projects explore patchwork and quilting techniques ideal for producing quilts from fabrics sorted according to tonal value (lights/mediums/darks) rather than simply by colour or design. Schemes for smaller projects, such as a cushion in One-square cathedral window design, or a cot quilt in Suns and stars design, really help the quilter to use up as many scraps of material as possible. Super Strata Quilts by Pamela Mostek and Susan Nelsen Inspired by the breathtaking beauty of Bali, this book shines with color-rich quilts that anyone can make! The authors' simple, versatile technique for SuperStrata (strip sets) includes much more than just straight piecing. Projects feature curved, angled, and diagonally cut SuperStrata--in a variety of widths--to create one-of-a-kind, contemporary quilts. For additional inspiration, each of the eight quilts is shown in two colorways!
Pamela Mostek is a prolific author and also the owner of a design and
publishing company, Making Lemonade Designs. She teaches both traditional- and
art-quilting classes throughout the country. Her original art quilts have
appeared in numerous national shows and exhibits. Susan Nelsen is the
owner of Rasmatazz Designs, a quilt-design and publishing company. The author
and coauthor of several books, she is also a freelance technical editor and
professional long-arm quilter. Quilt Remix by Emily Cier is an interesting book. There are mulitple quilt designs, originating from classic quilt patterns. Each pattern has a chart for each size of quilt, and the fabric requirements and cutting chart. There are a few quilts I really like: The Ohio Star made from strip sets; and Flying Geese made with many, many flying geese-beginning with very small geese and all the way up to a few large ones. Another quilt that I really like is called Pinwheel. The Pinwheel blocks are made into a traditional pinwheel block and then, cut into circles. I can imagine all kinds of things I would like to make using these blocks! There are a couple of quilts in the book that I just shook my head at: A wonky Irish Chain made with multiple wonky pieces that is labeled for a beginner; and a wonky Dresden plate made with sharp angles. These two quilts seem to be more work than the original patterns, but if you are going for a more artsy style, some of these quilts are for you. Though Quilt Remix gives instructions on all of the quilting steps, I would not recommend this book for a new, beginning quilter. A quilter that is ready for a little challenge and some interesting effects will really enjoy this book! |
